Should i join asmp

The reason I found it so valuable is the fact that we need to collaborate with our colleagues. Very few people have the image knowledge, photography business knowledge, and the experience other than fellow photographers to help you and advise you and bounce ideas around. It is so important to know and be known not just by your clients, but also by your peers. It builds community, and in this business of the lone wolf, that community becomes a lifeline at times.

These organizations are built by volunteers and working professionals. Christopher Winton-Stahle: The most obvious are the educational programs that are hosted by both the chapter level and the national level.

Several times each year there are inspirational programs held with nationally or internationally working and well-known photographers who always offer insight into how a person on that level is working and how they got to where they are. The less obvious are the lessons and education obtained through the relationships built with fellow photographers.

Having the courage to lead and direct is a big part of what contributes to success or failure in this industry. It is an experience that has literally changed my life and has not only helped me to grow my business but has helped me to grow as a person.

It provided a road map for me to follow, and taught me ways in which I can be a part of the industry without undermining it. My business would not have grown so quickly without those seminars. That continues today with webinars, symposiums, local programming, and camaraderie with members all across the nation. I feel I can call any member anywhere and find a helpful resource. Being part of the same organization helps bridge that gap.

For instance: marketing, retouching, CGI, and 3D technologies. Regardless of subject, the speakers and educational material has been by the best in the business. I have attended educational seminars on how to put together estimates, retouching, portfolio reviews, ad agency discussions, copyright, and many more. Ben Colman: I firmly believe ASMP, with its Strictly Business seminars along with many other educational offerings, including Professional Business Practices in Photography, Seventh Edition, is the hands-down leader in educating photographers on how to succeed.

Ivan Martinez: I feel there are three. First, new technology or business trends. For example, video is an area that is quickly gaining a great deal of interest among my clients.

Second, photography skills. Taking time to attend annual or monthly presentations hosted by the professional organizations is always a great opportunity to keep a sharp edge on the skills we need to be a leading business in our profession. The economics of retail photography doesn't differ much between doing weddings and doing portraits or both. If it seems like they're talking more about wedding photography, it's because retail photographers are shooting weddings or weddings plus portraits than there are photographers shooting only portraits.

But PPA's focus is on running a retail photography business, and there isn't much difference in that between weddings and portraits. Hi John - You are correct in your assessment that PPofA is primarily focused on consumer aspects of photographic business. ASMP is more geared towards commercial and editorial photography, and NPPA is primarily geared towards journalism, I would recommend joining the association with the most relevance to your business.

Great overview that can apply to photographer associations around the world. I was introduced to the PPofA back in the '70s, not long after I began my 44 year career as a licensed, working professional photographer.

He was being sarcastic, but after a few weeks, I began to recognize the pattern and I lost interest. There was no Internet back then of course but I did enjoy Rangefinder, PPof A Magazine and the seminars they listed, which were the backbone of non-online supplemental education in those days.

No sexism intended. I looked over the application and decided, I would not beg another photographer to vouch for me so that I could join a club I had to pay to belong to. I guess the echo of Groucho Marx saying he would never belong to a club that would have him as a member rang in my head, in some sarcastic, annoying way.

But seriously, I never understood, nor did I appreciate, nor did I feel compelled to tolerate that concept of having to beg, okay It just never rang reasonable to me. I have come to actually resent the fact that I would have to BEG, yeah, that's right Just can't do it!

It's always been to me, like I have always had business licenses to provide, stacks of them over the years, examples of my works published in dozens of mags and rags, though that should not be required, since many photographers shooting portraits, weddings never deal with publishing and seldom have tear sheets to provide, but if I remember, NPS requires recent tear sheets as well.

Had all the proof required that I was a working professional, but Just was not going to ASK, yeah Every resource is of value and they are often great resources. Do I have to upgrade my memberships at any point?

While upgrading is no longer required, it is encouraged, as your professional publication experience grows. An Emerging Associate is an exception because it is only a one-year membership and is automatically upgraded to the Associate at the completion of the year.

Is my contact information ever shared with vendors? ASMP does allow outside vendors access to the membership roster, but only after any potential offerings are fully reviewed for consistency with ASMP policy. Or a quick e-mail or phone call to the national office will keep your name off any list sent to outside solicitors.
