Have you ever downloaded torrents? PeerBlock is an open source program that can help you block those trackers who might catch you unawares. PeerBlock started where PeerGuardian left off. And its a big hit I tell you, a post in July their homepage claims 1 million downloads served.
Well its December now and I am pretty sure the numbers must have increased. All computers have a unique I nternet P rotocol address which they use to communicate with websites, servers, etc for displaying content in your browser, files you download etc. Downloading from peer-to-peer, p2p. Just run it before you open utorrent or any other file sharing software that you have and start downloading files and it will automatically block all bad connections. PS : PeerBlock will not hide your ip, it just blocks communication with the bad ones.
So you can still be tracked. Its just a precaution against the known ones. Always make sure you have an anti-virus running in realtime while you are connected to the internet. Hence, we could say that it largely acts as a blocker to protect our privacy.
This function is performed by means of one or more blacklists that contain information from organizations that the firewall will block when they make a request for information. The first time we start the program, all the lists will be updated. However, if we want to have an update more often, it will require a subscription payment. This does not mean that they are sometimes updated.
We will also explain later how you can update other lists to be more up to date. In summary, you can pay for a fairly inexpensive subscription, use the ones that come by default even if they take longer to update, or put a list from somewhere we will indicate later.
The first thing we need to do is go to its official website by clicking on the lien following. Then we'll get a screen like this:. Here we will click on the button Download to download the installer. Then we accept the license agreement and click on Next. Here it informs us that PeerBlock for Windows is compatible with versions , XP, , Vista and 7 both 32 bit and 64 bit. It is also fully compatible with Windows 10 with which this tutorial was made. The next step we are going to do is choose the directory where we want the program to be installed.
The normal thing would be to leave it in the folder provided by default and press Next. Then we will agree to create a section in the Windows Start menu, unless we are not interested. At this point in the installation, we'll decide if we want a shortcut to the program created and if we want PeerBlock for Windows to run when the operating system starts.
Once all the installation options have been selected, it will offer us a brief summary of what we are going to install. It only remains to press the button Installer to start the process. By simply clicking on Finish, we'll be done.
The first time we start the program a setup wizard will run and to start we will click on Next. This is undoubtedly one of the most important sections of the firewall. Here we are going to choose the lists of the items we want to block. Personally, we recommend that you select all four. The reason is what we talked about earlier - these lists are subscription-based and occasional updates are downloaded. Then, if we wish, they can be disabled later.
With it, it allows us to block P2P connections from P2P downloads, but allow traffic through HTTP protocol, so browsing will not be affected at any time.
I recommend not to activate it unless the use is exclusively for P2P downloads, and we are not interested in blocking the aforementioned listings while browsing the internet. There's a Bluetack's tool, something like Blocklist Manager I think, that allows to convert different formats, but I'm not sure how good it is. You'd have to give it a try. Anyway, I hope they don't forget about PeerBlock, or that at least someone else with great skills takes the code and works it.
But I tend to not believe in security programs that are not being intense developed. I had my issues with Peerblock in the past and I could not wait for an update that long You automatically load and update the lists, but you'd need to use the http version of that service.
PeerBlock won't accept https, in the current version. I don't know if a future version will allow it, though. Then, in Add URL: , paste the link you want. Then, press OK. Then, you just need to close the List Manager window, and PeerBlock will automatically download the list.
It seems that the IP ranges in the service you mentioned are in this way PeerBlock's format doesn't accept the spaces. Joined: Feb 11, Posts: 18 Location: canada. I think that programs such as peerblock are a necessity when surfing.
Especially with all the p2p trolls, and others these days. Peerblock does have some great features that should be used [along with other software] to achieve a somewhat secure computer.
By setting Peerblock to show all connections you can easily see what is coming and going. A right click on an ip address in the software window will allow you to allow or block these address's temporarily or permanently.
