He was then incarcerated for a year in Beijing's maximum-security Qincheng Prison, along with many other student leaders. Protesters received harsh punishments, from year-long jail terms to death sentences. But he had a sense they understood the protesters' demands and sympathised with the students.
During the interrogation, the two officers dropped "hints" to help Mr Chen avoid a harsher sentence. This won't be solved in a few days. It may take months'. In , Mr Chen mentioned to the pair he had a medical certificate confirming he had a herniated disc.
He remembered the two interrogators "seemed delighted" to know that. They used the medical statement to get bail for Mr Chen a few months later. In May that year, one of the interrogators happily told Mr Chen there might be a "special solution" for his case. But he still rushed to the prison to let me know. Mr Chen was released on bail on June 4, , and lived under the surveillance of local police in his hometown of Guangxi for more than six months.
Although he still remembers the help of those two men, to this day he doesn't know their full names — their personal information was kept confidential from the prisoners in the jail. Wang Liling, then a young businesswoman who took part in the protests in , recalls a similar experience with the police.
As the army's armoured vehicles drove into Tiananmen Square on June 4, Ms Wang said she and others dragged anything they could find — including bins and bus stop signs — to block off Chang'an Avenue. She fell and injured her knees on the shards of broken glass on the road, and her wounds later became severely infected. The doctor advised her to go to her hometown, Chengdu, where she had a better chance to be treated with penicillin.
